It is customary to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty King Ouf I with the spectacle of a public execution. This year, a victim is only found at the very last moment: the peddler Lazuli, without realizing it himself, hits His Majesty personally in the face.

Just before the execution, the court astrologer Siroco tells King Ouf I that His fate and the fate of the peddler condemned to death are linked. His Majesty is now forced to secure Lazuli's life at all costs and to ensure that he lacks nothing. This difficult task gives rise to crazy adventures: a stealthy flight from Lazuli with his beloved princess Laoula, a manhunt for both lovers, a possibly fatal shot…, and a frantic attempt to stop time! But all's well that ends well: Lazuli is allowed to marry his Laoula, and is even appointed heir to the throne of King Ouf I.

l'Etoile is a comic opera with a serious undertone and, despite years of neglect of its creator, is as light-footed as the work of a Gioacchino Rossini or a Jacques Offenbach. Cunning, love, time and future are the ingredients of an opera populated by characters with strange names, but to whom nothing human is alien.

Het is gebruikelijk de verjaardag van Zijne Majesteit Koning Ouf I op te luisteren met het spektakel van een openbare executie. Dit jaar wordt pas op het allerlaatste moment een slachtoffer gevonden: de marskramer Lazuli slaat, zonder het zelf te beseffen, Zijne Majesteit hoogst persoonlijk in het gezicht.

Vlak voor de terechtstelling vertelt de hof-astroloog Siroco aan Koning Ouf I, dat Zijn lot en het lot van de ter dood veroordeelde marskramer met elkaar verbonden zijn. Zijne Majesteit ziet zich nu gedwongen het leven van Lazuli, koste wat het kost, veilig te stellen en het hem aan niets te laten ontbreken. Deze moeilijke taak is aanleiding tot doldwaze avonturen: een heimelijke vlucht van Lazuli met zijn beminde prinses Laoula, een klopjacht op beide geliefden, een misschien wel dodelijk schot…, en een verwoede poging de tijd stil te zetten! Maar eind goed, al goed: Lazuli mag met zijn Laoula trouwen, en wordt zelfs tot troonopvolger van Koning Ouf I benoemd.

l’Etoile is een komische opera met een serieuze ondertoon en doet, ondanks de jarenlange veronachtzaming van zijn schepper, in lichtvoetigheid niet onder voor het werk van een Gioacchino Rossini of een Jacques Offenbach. List, liefde, tijd en toekomst zijn de ingrediënten van een opera die wordt bevolkt door personages met merkwaardige namen, maar aan wie niets menselijks vreemd is.
