L'incoronazione di Poppea
With this PoppeaIn 2018 the Spanish director Calixto Bieito succeeded in creating a production that delighted the public and the press alike: In the spectacular stage design by Rebecca Ringst, which connects the auditorium and the scene in an unusual way, the figures, eaten by ambition, present themselves on a catwalk of vanities; meter high video screens are omnipresent and complete the glamor world of eternal self-reflection. Julie Fuchs has already been celebrated in the premiere series; In this resumption, too, she sings the sensual, self-confident Poppea, who gets her will through regardless of loss, ruthlessly walks over corpses and is finally crowned empress. The Australian counter tenor David Hansen is on par with her performance;

The Italian baroque specialist Ottavio Dantone is at the podium of the Orchestra La Scintilla. Monteverdi's Poppea is now 370 years old - but the characters who appear in this piece seem amazingly modern to us, their abysses and passions could be our own. Monteverdi brilliantly captured Nero's tyrannical hysteria and Poppea's overwhelming sensuality. The music dramatist Monteverdi also appears modern to us through the inseparable connection between language and music, through which he achieves a high level of drama in the short scenes, and through the virtuoso combination of comedy and tragedy.
