Bartoli's magnificent performance in Gioachino Rossini's L'Italiana in Algeri at the Salzburg Festival, directed by BAFTA-winning director duo Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, is a highlight of the Rossini celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the composer's death. In this lively comedy, every look and every hand gesture brings Isabella to life: Bartoli presents the spirited Italian with fire, finesse and extraordinary acting skills - "a Rossini masterclass" (Bachtrack). Her Isabella is a strong, independent woman who has no intention of accepting the advances of the powerful Mustafà. In the Leiser/Caurier staging, which plays with prejudiced notions about opposing cultures, Mustafà is no longer an Ottoman bey, but a kind of local gangster smuggling electronics in the port of modern-day Algeria. In Christian Fenouillat's colorful sets, Ildar Abdrazakov sings the lascivious macho and looks for joy and "great comic talent" (Salzburger Nachrichten) after a love affair with the beautiful Italian.
