The occasion makes the thief (1812) is the fourth of the five one-act operas that Rossini composed for the Venetian theater of San Moisè between 1810 and 1813 and which constitute a fundamental step in the definition of his comic style. Rossini was eighteen years old when he made his debut with the first of five, La cambiale di matrimonio (1810), which was followed L'inganno felice and La scala di seta .
For The occasion ago the thief Rossini was able to take advantage (as for the subsequent Signor Bruschino) of the experience accumulated with the more complex dramaturgy of the Pietra del paragone, which in that same year marked his debut at the Scala in Milan. It was a period of frenetic activity for the young composer - The occasion was composed, it seems, in just eleven days - yet the five works today appear to be authentic models of freshness and perfection, true miniatures of subsequent comic works (such as L'Italiana in Algeri , written a few months after The Occasion). Vocal flourishes in an imaginative variety of writing, from dense spelling to bel canto ornamentations; the concertati take the play of lines, rhythms and timbres to the extreme; the small orchestra shines with iridescent colors. The occasion makes the thief represents, together with Mr. Bruschino, one of Rossini's leaders in this genre.
