Невинная принцесса обвиняется в страшном преступлении. Ее положение кажется отчаянным, но тут является неведомый заступник – бесстрашный рыцарь. Вершится божий суд, злодей посрамлен, народ ликует, рыцарь ведет принцессу под венец. Сюжет очень уж привычный; но именно с того момента, на котором большинство подобных историй заканчивается, в «Лоэнгрине» начинается самое главное. Исчерпав внешний конфликт, Вагнер сосредоточивается на внутреннем. При всей своей медлительной эпичности «Лоэнгрин» чрезвычайно психологичен. Заворожив слушателей видениями «тонкого мира» в оркестровом вступлении, решительно покончив с несправедливым судебным разбирательством в первом действии, Вагнер далее – на протяжении двух актов – разворачивает напряженную психологическую драму. Существует немало опер о любви, но именно в «Лоэнгрине» тема любви развита глубоко и последовательно до беспощадности. Что значит безусловная любовь (или, как сейчас говорят, «безусловное принятие»)? Существуют ли в любви границы доверия и самоотдачи? Существует ли право знать? Право скрывать? Где мера свободы человека и его ответственности? Вагнер соединил двух идеально подходящих друг другу героев и убедился, что гармония между ними невозможна. Его самого эта ситуация потрясала до слез; он даже пытался переделать финал, но убедился, что «Лоэнгрин» может закончиться только так, а не иначе. Написанная в годы общественно-политических волнений середины XIX века композитором-оппозиционером, опера «Лоэнгрин» чрезвычайно пессимистична: миссия провалена, царство Грааля на земле не построить. Хотя детективная линия в сюжете заканчивается благополучно – пропавший без вести мальчик возвращается и, наверное, будет хорошим правителем Брабанта, – генеральная линия завершается трагичнее, чем даже в «Тристане», где влюбленные, пусть и в ином мире, все же соединились.
При этом «Лоэнгрин» отнюдь не мрачная опера: наоборот, она вся пронизана неземным светом Грааля, прозрачным эфиром горнего царства. Композитор сотворил это сияние музыкальными средствами, а художники, оформившие мариинского «Лоэнгрина» по эскизам львовского сценографа-визионера Евгения Лысыка, воплотили его в красках. «Готическая» сценография звучит величественным визуальным аккордом, а музыканты создают живописное вокально-симфоническое полотно, мастерски отделывая каждую деталь. Спектакль Мариинского театра осуществляет мечту Вагнера о синтезе искусств, о единении слышимого и видимого в цельный и мощный художественный образ. Христина Батюшина

An innocent princess is accused of a terrible crime. Her situation seems desperate, but then an unknown intercessor appears - a fearless knight. God's judgment is being carried out, the villain is put to shame, the people rejoice, the knight leads the princess down the aisle. The plot is very familiar; but it is precisely from the moment at which most of these stories end that the most important thing begins in Lohengrin. Having exhausted the external conflict, Wagner focuses on the internal. For all its slow epicness, Lohengrin is extremely psychological. Having captivated the audience with visions of the "subtle world" in the orchestral introduction, decisively putting an end to the unfair trial in the first act, Wagner then - over the course of two acts - unfolds a tense psychological drama. There are many operas about love, but it is precisely in Lohengrin that the theme of love is developed deeply and consistently to the point of ruthlessness. What does unconditional love (or, as they say now, “unconditional acceptance”) mean? Are there limits to trust and self-giving in love? Is there a right to know? Right to hide? Where is the measure of human freedom and responsibility? Wagner brought together two characters ideally suited to each other and made sure that harmony between them was impossible. This situation shocked him to tears; he even tried to remake the ending, but he became convinced that Lohengrin could only end in this way and not otherwise. Written during the years of social and political unrest in the middle of the 19th century by an opposition composer, the opera Lohengrin is extremely pessimistic: the mission has failed, the kingdom of the Grail cannot be built on earth.
At the same time, Lohengrin is by no means a gloomy opera: on the contrary, it is all permeated with the unearthly light of the Grail, the transparent ether of the mountainous kingdom. The composer created this radiance with musical means, and the artists who designed the Mariinsky "Lohengrin" according to the sketches of the Lviv visionary stage designer Yevgeny Lysyk, embodied it in paint. The "Gothic" scenography sounds like a majestic visual chord, and the musicians create a picturesque vocal and symphonic canvas, skillfully finishing every detail. The performance of the Mariinsky Theater fulfills Wagner's dream of the synthesis of the arts, of the unity of the audible and the visible into an integral and powerful artistic image.
