‘Onvergetelijk’, schreef Trouw afgelopen seizoen over de Mahler-vuurdoop van chef-dirigent Lorenzo Viotti met de Vijfde symfonie. Dat belooft wat voor de grandioze Symfonie nr. 9, Mahlers laatste voltooide symfonie, die in het teken staat van zijn afscheid van het leven.

Nederland kent een bijzondere Mahler-traditie. Als een nieuwe chef-dirigent zich aan een symfonie van Mahler waagt, zijn dan ook alle ogen en oren op hem of haar gericht. De eerste Mahler-concerten van het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest met Lorenzo Viotti als chef-dirigent waren een daverend succes. ‘Je keek je oren uit in deze gespierde uitvoering vol scherpe contrasten. Het NedPhO was in blakende topvorm, hoorbaar blij en ingenomen met zo’n magnetiserende chef’, aldus Peter van der Lint.

Mahlers Symfonie nr. 9
Met elk van de negen symfonieën die hij voltooide, creëerde Gustav Mahler een geheel eigen klankwereld. Mahler was ervan overtuigd dat zijn Symfonie nr. 9 tegelijk zijn laatste zou zijn: een negende symfonie was een doodvonnis, zo hadden Beethoven en Bruckner volgens hem immers al bewezen. Het inspireerde Mahler tot misschien wel zijn meest indringende en emotioneel geladen muziek; muziek waarin hij afscheid neemt van het leven.

The Netherlands has a special Mahler tradition. When a new chief conductor ventures into a Mahler symphony, all eyes and ears are on him or her. The first Mahler concerts by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra with Lorenzo Viotti as chief conductor were a resounding success. 'You were amazed in this muscular performance full of sharp contrasts. The NedPhO was in blazing top form, audibly happy and taken with such a magnetizing chef,' says Peter van der Lint.

Mahler's Symphony No. 9
With each of the nine symphonies he completed, Gustav Mahler created his own sound world. Mahler was convinced that his Symphony No. 9 would also be his last: a ninth symphony was a death sentence, as Beethoven and Bruckner had already proven, according to him. It inspired Mahler to perhaps his most poignant and emotionally charged music; music in which he says goodbye to life.
