Lord Enrico Ashton has only one goal: paying off his debts to save the family inheritance. In order to put this plan into action, his sister Lucia's marriage to Lord Bucklaw seems to be the only way. Completely ignorant of the feelings of his sister, who is in love with Edgardo, Enrico goes ahead with the wedding. When Lucia's lover turns out to be the long-lost rightful owner of Ravenswood Castle, Enrico accuses Lucia of treason. By means of fictitious letters, Lucia is forced to consent to her marriage to Lord Bucklaw. Edgardo feels betrayed by Lucia, revokes his promise of marriage and flees. While Enrico pursues Edgardo to challenge him to a duel, Lucia stabs her husband on their wedding night. When Edgardo learns of the madness and finally of Lucia's death, he stabs himself. With the premiere of his "Lucia di Lammermoor " the young Donizetti achieved his breakthrough as a composer and a true masterpiece of bel canto.
