Gaetano Donizetti's opera Lucia di Lammermoor (1835) has everything a real music lover should attract: a passionate love story, the romantic atmosphere of Northern Britain, where the action takes place, and, of course, beautiful music in the style of bel canto.

Gaetano Donizetti’s opera was inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor which was incredibly popular at that time. The conflict in the story is based on the long-standing feud between two Scottish clans, the Ravenswoods and the Ashtons, and is aggravated by Enrico Ashton’s sister Lucia’s love for Ravenswood’s son, Edgardo, which fact is perceived by the others as dishonour to the Ashton clan. To repair his dented political position, Enrico plans to marry his sister off to Lord Arturo Bucklaw. To that end, he tries to make her submit to the wedding by showing her a forged letter about Edgardo’s infidelity. Shocked with her lover’s unfaithfulness, Lucia signs the marriage contract with Lord Bucklaw, which act entails a swing of tragic events…

Love, jealousy, murder, madness… Lucia di Lammermoor is considered to be one of Donizetti’s most popular operas. The brilliant part of Lucia has invariably been in the repertoire of many celebrated sopranos, including Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Montserrat Caballé and Edita Gruberova. The tenor part of Edgardo is no less effective; the closer is the opera’s finale, the higher are the notes. Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor is an example of the Italian romantic musical drama. Having absorbed the opera traditions of the previous period, it kind of throws a bridge between the Mozart musical theatre and Verdi’s dramatic operas.

В опере Гаэтано Доницетти «Лючия ди Ламмермур» (1835) есть все, что должно привлечь настоящего меломана: полный страстей любовный сюжет, романтическая атмосфера Северной Британии, где разворачивается действие, и, конечно, прекрасная музыка в стиле бельканто.

На создание оперы Г. Доницетти вдохновил роман Вальтера Скотта «Ламмермурская невеста» (1819),необычайно популярный в то время. Сюжетный конфликт основан на давней вражде двух шотландских родов – Равенсвуд и Эштон – и осложнен любовью сестры Генриха Эштона Лючии к сыну Равенсвуда Эдгардо, что воспринимается окружающими как бесчестие для всего рода Эштон. Желая поправить пошатнувшееся политическое положение, Генрих намеревается выдать сестру замуж за лорда Артура Бэклоу. Для этого он пытается сломить ее сопротивление с помощью подложного письма о неверности Эдгардо. Потрясенная изменой возлюбленного, Лючия подписывает брачный договор с лордом Бэклоу, что становится отправной точкой целой череды трагических событий… 

Любовь, ревность, убийство, безумие… «Лючия ди Ламмермур» считается едва ли не самой популярной оперой Доницетти. Виртуознейшая драматичная партия Лючии неизменно входила и входит в репертуар самых прославленных певиц мира, в числе которых Мария Каллас, Джоан Сазерленд, Монсеррат Кабалье, Эдита Груберова. Не менее эффектна и теноровая партия Эдгардо; чем ближе конец оперы, тем больше в ней предельно высоких нот. «Лючия ди Ламмермур» Доницетти – образец итальянской романтической музыкальной драмы. Впитав в себя оперные традиции предшествующего периода, она как бы выстраивает мост от музыкального театра Вольфганга Амадея Моцарта к драматическим операм Джузеппе Верди.
