With a keen sense of the dramatic, Mozart tells the story of the power-conscious and unscrupulous, but ultimately benevolent Roman Emperor Lucio Silla. Silla got rid of all his enemies and sent the young senator Cecilio into exile in order to marry his fiancée Giunia. But she refuses and threatens to kill herself. An attempt by the returned Cecilio on the dictator fails. Cecilio is sentenced to death. But fearing that the people will no longer love him, Silla forgives the culprit and gives him Giunia in marriage. Mozart's early dramma per musica is regarded as the most mature of his works composed for Italy and also as an outstanding musical discovery of the 20th century.

Mit sicherem Gespür für das Dramatische erzählt Mozart die Geschichte um den machtbewussten und skrupellosen, doch am Ende gütigen römischen Imperator Lucio Silla. Silla hat sich all seiner Feinde entledigt und den jungen Senator Cecilio in die Verbannung geschickt, um dessen Verlobte Giunia zu heiraten. Diese aber weigert sich und droht, sich zu töten. Ein Anschlag des zurückgekehrten Cecilio auf den Diktator misslingt. Cecilio wird zum Tode verurteilt. Doch aus Furcht, vom Volk nicht mehr geliebt zu werden, verzeiht Silla dem Schuldigen und gibt ihm Giunia zur Frau. Mozarts frühes Dramma per musica gilt als das reifste seiner für Italien komponierten Werke und zudem als überragende musikalische Entdeckung des 20. Jahrhunderts.
