Lucrezia Borgia - a poisoner, murderess, femme fatale, schemer and liar, daughter and concubine of the Pope and lover of her brother. Lucrezia owes these legendary attributions to her surname, because the Borgias were probably one of the most influential and for this reason most hated families of the Renaissance - the first mafia of the Vatican. Is there any room at all to suggest that Lucrezia Borgia might actually have been a deeply unhappy woman and a passionately loving mother? Gaetano Donizetti approaches the title character of his opera with psychological precision and creates one of the most beautiful and multifaceted bel canto roles for coloratura soprano. The drama of the same name by Victor Hugo served as the basis for the drama, in which Lucrezia Borgia becomes the involuntary murderer of her own son. In her Mannheim production, Rahel Thiel (»Eugen Onegin«) tells the story of a lone wolf in a man's world who wants to resist the fate of her name

Lucrezia Borgia – eine Giftmischerin, Mörderin, Femme fatale, Intrigantin und Lügnerin, Tochter und Konkubine des Papstes und Geliebte ihres Bruders. Diese sagenhaften Zuschreibungen hat Lucrezia ihrem Nachnamen zu verdanken, denn die Borgias waren eine der wohl einflussreichsten und aus diesem Grund meistgehassten Familien der Renaissance – die erste Mafia des Vatikans. Bleibt da überhaupt Platz für die Vermutung, dass Lucrezia Borgia in Wirklichkeit eine zutiefst unglückliche Frau und eine leidenschaftlich liebende Mutter gewesen sein könnte? Gaetano Donizetti nähert sich der Titelfigur seiner Oper mit psychologischer Präzision und erschafft eine der schönsten und facettenreichsten Belcanto-Rollen für Koloratursopran. Als dramatische Vorlage diente das gleichnamige Schauspiel von Victor Hugo, in dem Lucrezia  Borgia zur unfreiwilligen Mörderin ihres eigenen Sohnes wird. In ihrer Mannheimer Inszenierung erzählt Rahel Thiel (»Eugen Onegin«) die Geschichte einer Alleingängerin in einer Männerwelt, die sich dem Verhängnis ihres Namens widersetzen will.
