When the Scottish nobleman Macbeth returns home from a glorious battle, he encounters three witches who predict a golden future for him as Lord of Cawdor and King of Scotland. After the first prophecy has been fulfilled, Lady Macbeth urges to make fate submissive and incites her husband to murder the king.

The unconditionality of desire gives the love between Macbeth and his wife a radicality that was previously unthinkable in opera. In this way, the work marks the departure from the Italian music theatre tradition, in which love stories, sensuality and bel canto have been an integral part to date. The morbid mood of doom musically evoked by Verdi more than does justice to Shakespeare's dramatic template.

Director Amélie Niermeyer returns to Salzburg to illuminate the masterpiece of ambition, lust for power and betrayal in the mystical-archaic Felsenreitschule and to explore the depths of the human self.

Giuseppe Verdi's (1813–1901) opera "Macbeth" was premiered in 1847 at the Teatro della Pergola in Florence. The audience enthusiastically received the performance, conducted by Verdi himself, and soon the Paris version was created. Today, the "Scottish Play" is part of the core repertoire of the opera.

Music director Leslie Suganandarajah conducts the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. For the first time he collaborates with the renowned director Amélie Niermeyer, who stages at the Munich Residenztheater, the Bavarian State Opera and the Vienna State Opera, among others.
The piece lasts about 2 hours and 50 minutes and takes place with intermission.
