"Macbeth" is Giuseppe Verdi's tenth opera and at the same time his first engagement with the work of William Shakespeare. The premiere took place in Florence in 1847; Eighteen years later a revised version was presented in Paris.
With its dramatic conciseness, "Macbeth" set new standards that Verdi was to remain true to from then on. Verdi saw the special position of this opera, which he said he loved more than all his other operas, in the successful synthesis of music and drama. The character of Lady Macbeth in particular, which Verdi made the actual main role in his opera, took up a lot of time both in composition and in rehearsals.
