Macbeth
In the end, the insane Lady Macbeth sits alone in the cold headlights, tries in vain to wipe the bloodstains from her hand and talks to a black crow, the only creature she seems to understand. This is just one of many scenic coups in Barrie Kosky's radically reduced Macbethproduction that was showered with awards in its premiere year and praised by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung as an "aesthetic milestone in the reception of the opera's work". Barrie Kosky doesn't need much more than an empty, black stage that curves into infinity, two glisteningly bright light cages as a stage, two chairs, a naked witch population and a few colorful streamers to tell Verdi's setting of the Shakespeare classic. The direction focuses entirely on the inner drama of Macbeth and his wife. The action seems to be taking place only in the couple's heads, in the form of voices, shadows, ghostly perceptions and hallucinations in empty space. This Macbeth is also seven years after the premierestill a scenic throw of gripping suggestive power. This year's performance series brings a reunion with the great Tatiana Serjan, who sang the lady in the premiere. The Verdi baritone George Petean, celebrated in many productions in Zurich, is the ruler at her side who is murdering himself on the royal throne.
