Macbeth is Verdi's tenth opera, in which he made a libretto based on Shakespeare's masterpiece for the first time (premiere in 1847). In his Macbeth, Verdi painted a picture of a devastating and destructive couple: Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are two poor, dehumanized beings whose relationship oscillates between a caricature of marriage and a purely masculine, ruthless power struggle. However, both are also cruel conspirators who long for power, obsessed with the burning need to fill their sense of emptiness and futility with something.

Macbeth je v poradí desiatou Verdiho operou, v ktorej sa po prvýkrát podujal zhudobniť libreto podľa Shakespearovej predlohy (premiéra v roku 1847). Verdi vo svojom Macbethovi vytvoril obraz zničujúceho a ničiteľského páru: Macbeth a Lady Macbeth sú dve úbohé, odľudštené bytosti, ktorých vzťah osciluje medzi karikatúrou manželstva a čisto mužským, neľútostným bojom o moc. Obaja sú však i krutými sprisahancami bažiacimi po moci, posadnutými spaľujúcou potrebou zaplniť niečím pocit svojej prázdnoty a zbytočnosti.
