In his old film studios in Brooklyn, Mack, the famous silent film director Mr. Sennet, remembers his great star, who was also his great love: Mabel. This Mabel Normand stumbled into his studio by accident as a sausage seller. Mack immediately spotted her comic talent and hired her on the spot. She quickly replaced Lotti Ames as the main star of his slapstick films. With Mabel came the great success that opened the way to California. Mack fell in love with Mabel but never admitted it to her. Instead, he preferred to let the choleric director hang out, who would have nothing left for romance. At some point Mabel had enough of his films with the same gags and all the cakes on his face - and of him. So she went to the competition. After a reboot between the two also failed and she wanted to go to Paris, Mack made one last attempt to win Mabel back, but was unable to be really consistent. Now he's back where it all began, and he's lost everything: the film world has changed because of the sound film. But what hurts him most is that he has finally lost Mabel. But did he really?

Written by Hello Dolly composer Jerry Herman, Mack and Mabel is a classic feel-good musical with lots of pizzazz and panache. In addition to all the comedy, there is also plenty of emotion. However, the musical, which premiered on Broadway in New York in 1974, is dangerous: the main melodies are so catchy that you might only come home dancing or whistling. ‎

Mack, der berühmte Stummfilm-Regisseur Mr. Sennet, erinnert sich in seinen alten Filmstudios in Brooklyn an seinen großen Star, der zugleich seine große Liebe war: Mabel. Diese Mabel Normand stolperte damals eher zufällig als Würstchenverkäuferin in sein Studio. Mack entdeckte sofort ihr komisches Talent und engagierte sie vom Fleck weg. Schnell löste sie Lotti Ames als Hauptstar seiner Slapstick-Filme ab. Mit Mabel kam der große Erfolg, der den Weg nach Kalifornien eröffnete. Mack verliebte sich in Mabel, konnte ihr dies jedoch nie eingestehen. Stattdessen ließ er lieber den cholerischen Regisseur raushängen, der für Romantik nichts übrig hätte. Irgendwann hatte Mabel genug von seinen Filmen mit den immer gleichen Gags und den vielen Torten im Gesicht – und von ihm. Also ging sie zur Konkurrenz. Nachdem auch ein Neustart zwischen beiden scheiterte und sie nach Paris wollte, startete Mack einen letzten Versuch Mabel zurückzugewinnen, war jedoch unfähig, wirklich konsequent zu sein. Nun ist er wieder hier, wo das alles begann, und hat alles verloren: Die Filmwelt ist durch den Tonfilm eine andere geworden. Am meisten aber schmerzt ihn, dass er Mabel endgültig verloren hat. Aber hat er das wirklich?

Mack und Mabel aus der Feder des Hello Dolly-Komponisten Jerry Herman ist ein klassisches Gute-Laune-Musical mit viel Pfiff und Schwung. Neben aller Komik kommt aber auch die Emotion nicht zu kurz. Das 1974 am New Yorker Broadway uraufgeführte Musical ist jedoch gefährlich: Die Hauptmelodien brennen sich so sehr als Ohrwürmer ein, dass man anschließend womöglich nur noch tänzelnd oder pfeifend nach Hause kommt. ‎‎‎
