S’il y a bien un compositeur qui a su traduire en musique la lutte désespérée de l’être humain contre un sort implacable, c’est Gustav Mahler avec sa Sixième Symphonie. Mais pourquoi une telle partition, avec ses marches funèbres, ses coups de marteau, sa lugubre tonalité en la mineur, alors que, ces années-là, Mahler a justement le vent en poupe ? Directeur artistique de l’opéra de Vienne, il enchaîne les succès : sa propre musique rencontre une popularité croissante, et la naissance de sa deuxième fille apporte joie et stabilité dans sa vie familiale. Cherchait-il à conjurer le malheur qui frappe les mortels trop favorisés par le destin dans les tragédies grecques ? Pressentait-il les nuages noirs qui allaient s’amonceler autour de lui ? Quelle que soit la raison qui l’a poussé à écrire cette symphonie, le sort le frappa effectivement sans pitié : dans l’année suivant la première de l’œuvre, sa fille Maria mourut à l’âge de quatre ans, on diagnostiqua au compositeur l’affection cardiaque qui lui serait fatale, et il fut contraint de démissionner de l’opéra de Vienne. Trois coups durs qui donnent à sa symphonie de sinistres airs de prémonition. Jamais le surnom de « Tragique » n’a été plus approprié… 
  
Pour l’exécution de cette imposante symphonie, avec son effectif énorme, les musicien·nes de l’Orchestre symphonique de la Monnaie travailleront coude à coude avec le Belgian National Orchestra. Sous la direction d’Antony Hermus, l’œuvre sera interprétée comme son auteur l’a conçue : comme une musique avec un véritable enjeu.

If there is a composer who has been able to translate into music the desperate struggle of human beings against an implacable fate, it is Gustav Mahler with his Sixth Symphony. But why such a score, with its funeral marches, its hammerings, its lugubrious tonality in A minor, when, in those years, Mahler was precisely on the rise? Artistic director of the Vienna Opera, he had a string of successes: his own music met with growing popularity, and the birth of his second daughter brought joy and stability to his family life. Was he seeking to ward off the misfortune that strikes mortals too favored by fate in Greek tragedies? Did he sense the dark clouds that were going to gather around him? Whatever the reason that prompted him to write this symphony, fate indeed struck him without mercy: in the year following the premiere of the work, his daughter Maria died at the age of four, it was diagnosed at the composer the heart disease that would be fatal to him, and he was forced to resign from the Vienna Opera. Three hard blows that give his symphony a sinister air of premonition. Never has the nickname “Tragic” been more appropriate… 
  
For the performance of this imposing symphony, with its enormous workforce, the musicians of the Orchester symphonique de la Monnaie will work shoulder to shoulder with the Belgian National Orchestra. Under the direction of Antony Hermus, the work will be interpreted as its author conceived it: as music with a real stake.
