"Any silly boy can crush a beetle. But all the professors in the world cannot make one.” (Arthur Schopenhauer) This concert is all about the beauty and drama of creation. The diversity of nature exerts a magical pull on the Australian Brett Dean, as it does on so many other composers. However, Dean also draws critical attention to the problems of our civilization – to "our relentless and respectless rampaging through the world's forests and wilderness areas, all in the name of more shopping, freeways, carparks and convenience.” His now famous 2000 "Pastoral Symphony" thus revolves around the destruction of the earth: "This piece, then, is about glorious birdsong, the threat that it faces, the loss, and the soulless noise that we're left with when they're all gone." In Beethoven's day, the world was still more or less all right in this respect. Beethoven liked to go on long walks and once wrote in a letter, “No-one can love the countryside as I do. For forests, trees, and rocks provide the response that human beings desire!” His sixth symphony truly is an ode to nature – and if one is to believe his words, even "gold buntings, quails, nightingales, and cuckoos had a part in composing it." In between these fascinating pastoral symphonies, our solo cellist Marius Urba will make a grand appearance in the Second Cello Concerto by Shostakovich. Shostakovich completed the work in 1966 in a sanatorium, completely exhausted by a range of illnesses. Despite his failing health, he managed to produce a masterpiece – and although the concerto wrestles with the themes of farewell and death, it still contains plenty of the grotesque moments so typical of this composer.

Aber alle Professoren der Welt können keinen herstellen.« (Arthur Schopenhauer) Unser Konzert dreht sich um Schönheit und Drama der Schöpfung: Wie auf jede Menge andere Komponisten übt die Vielfalt der Natur auf den Australier Brett Dean eine magische Anziehungskraft aus. Allerdings weist er auch kritisch auf die Probleme unserer Zivilisation hin – auf »schonungs- und respektloses Wüten durch die Wälder und Wildnisse«: »Alles für neue Einkaufszentren, Straßen, Parkplätze und unserer Bequemlichkeit zuliebe.« Seine berühmt gewordene »Pastoral Symphony« aus dem Jahr 2000 dreht sich daher um die Zerstörung der Erdenbühne: »Ein Stück über den herrlichen Gesang der Vögel, seine Bedrohungen, seinen Verlust und den seelenlosen Lärm, der übrig bleibt, wenn alle verschwunden sind.« Zu Beethovens Zeiten war die Welt diesbezüglich noch weitgehend in Ordnung. Er begab sich gerne auf lange Spaziergänge und schrieb einmal in einem Brief: »Kein Mensch kann das Land so
lieben wie ich. Geben doch Wälder, Bäume, Felsen den Widerhall, den der Mensch wünscht!« Seine sechste Symphonie ist wahrlich eine Ode an die Natur – und will man seinen Worten glauben, haben hier sogar »Goldammern, Wachteln, Nachtigallen und Kuckucke mitkomponiert«.
Zwischen den faszinierenden Pastoralsymphonien hat unser Solocellist Marius Urba seinen großen Auftritt mit dem zweiten Cellokonzert von Schostakowitsch, der das Werk 1966 in einem Sanatorium vollendete, völlig erschöpft durch zahlreiche Erkrankungen. Dennoch gelang ihm mit dem grandiosen Konzert noch ein großer Wurf – und obwohl er sich hier eindrücklich mit den Themen Abschied und Tod auseinandersetzte, fehlen auch die für ihn so typisch grotesken Momente nicht.
