Bergen National Opera opens the Festspillene 2013 with an opera based on the world's most famous voyage of discovery.

Marco Polo's legendary voyage of discovery from Italy to China is the starting point for this weave of an opera by Tan Dun. Different languages, cultures and eras intertwine here, and on the journey there will be Beijing opera, Japanese kabuki theatre, Indonesian shadow theater and Tibetan rituals.

At the same time as we move geographically through the performance, we also move into an inner landscape where figures such as Dante, Shakespeare and Li Po act as interlocutors. The Chinese composer Tan Dun (1957-) has left his mark on the world's music scenes with works that transcend the boundaries between Eastern and Western musical traditions, art music and multimedia performance. Dun has been awarded several of the most prestigious music awards - including the Grammy and Oscar for best film score in Sneak Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Conductor Baldur Brönnimann leads an international team of singers together with KorVest and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

The young director, designer and video artist  Netia Jones  has, among other things, specialized in integrating film into her performances and concerts. The Observer newspaper has described her as "the most imaginative opera director in Britain today".

Presented by the Bergen National Opera and the Festivals in Bergen, in collaboration with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and KorVest.

Bergen Nasjonale Opera åpner Festspillene 2013 med opera basert på verdens mest berømte oppdagelsesreise.

Marco Polos legendariske oppdagelsesreise fra Italia til Kina er utgangspunktet for denne veven av en opera av Tan Dun. Her flettes ulike språk, kulturer og tidsepoker sammen, og på reisen blir det både Beijing-opera, japansk kabukiteater, indonesisk skyggeteater og tibetanske ritualer.

Samtidig som vi forflytter oss geografisk gjennom forestillingen, beveger vi oss også inn i et indre landskap hvor skikkelser som Dante, Shakespeare og Li Po opptrer som samtalepartnere. Den kinesiske komponisten Tan Dun (1957-) har satt sitt preg på verdens musikkscener med verker som overskrider grensene mellom østlige og vestlige musikktradisjoner, kunstmusikk og multimedia-performance. Dun har blitt tildelt flere av de mest prestisjefylte musikkprisene - deriblant Grammy og Oscar for beste filmmusikk i Snikende tiger, skjult drage.

Dirigent Baldur Brönnimann leder et internasjonalt lag sangere sammen med KorVest og Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester.

Den unge regissøren, designeren og videokunstneren Netia Jones har blant annet spesialisert seg på å integrere film i sine forestillinger og konserter. Avisen The Observer har beskrevet henne som "den mest fantasifulle operaregissøren i Storbritannia i dag".
