May Night is the second of fifteen operas by Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov . The composer wrote the opera's libretto himself, trying to preserve not only the course of Gogol's narration, but also his colorful colloquial language. Relying on Gogol's text, Rimsky-Korsakov built the dramaturgy of the opera on the juxtaposition of the real and fantasy world, linking them with ritual and play round dances. 

"May Night" is permeated with the intonations of Ukrainian and Russian songs, this opera can be called an opera-song. Everything sings in it - both the heroes and the orchestra. The characters' characters are revealed in the singing, and the musical portraits of the sister-in-law, Head, Vinokur, imbued with Gogol's humor, set off the lyrical flavor of the opera. All of it is filled with a spring poetic feeling, the aroma of first love.

The first performance of "May Night" took place on January 9 (21),  1880 at the stage of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg.
