In his opera, Tchaikovsky describes the demise of an old world, war and upheaval, the fear of the population in times of crisis and the almost unlimited possibilities that are only open to a power-hungry person like Mazeppa. Unscrupulously, the Cossack captain uses the imponderables of the political situation to his advantage. Mary's hope for a better future, the great expectations of the youth, are bitterly disappointed, the new system inherits the mistakes and never healed wounds of the old one. Tchaikovsky sensitively illuminates the feelings of the individual characters, the movement of the masses – and thus creates a great social narrative of captivating topicality.
