London in the roaring 1920s. Jack Worthing and his wards Cecily Cardew stand at the train station collecting for the Salvation Army. Both minds are completely different: Jack wants to go to his friend Algernon Moncrieff to secretly become engaged to his cousin Gwendolen. Cecily is looking forward to her appearance as "Sunshine Girl" in the Music Hall. Laetitia Prism and Pastor Frederic Chasuble, who also collect alms, have no idea of ​​their double life. Just like the morally inviolable Lady Augusta Bracknell, Jack's aunt. The material well-being of Cecily, Jack and Algernon depends on their bourgeois façade or on the benevolence of wealthy relatives. It's good to have Bunbury, the personified alibi. But one day this alibi is revealed.

After the acclaimed premiere in 1964 in Berlin's Metropol-Theater, My Friend Bunbury was the first to be performed in Altenburg with great success; Heinz Scholze's new production in 1979 was also acclaimed. Thanks to its frivolous and amusing plot, lively dialogues, electrifying rhythms and brisk hits, the most successful musical from GDR times has lost none of its wit and temperament to this day. After 42 years, the masterpiece by Gerd Natschinski (1928-2015) is now returning to Altenburg!
