Peut-on composer à partir de rien ? Probablement. Mais il est tout aussi pertinent de penser qu’il existe souvent, dans la mémoire d’un compositeur, un élément qu’il réinvestit, consciemment ou de façon plus volontaire. Ainsi les spécialistes s’accordent à reconnaître au final du Quatuor n° 11 de Beethoven un lien thématique avec son Ouverture d’Egmont, achevée depuis peu. L’idée que « derrière chaque musique, il s’en cache une autre » est celle que défend Gérard Pesson. Dans Nebenstück ou « Morceau à côté », une œuvre pour clarinette et quatuor à cordes, il prend pour trame de son discours la Ballade op. 10 n°4 de Brahms. Enfin, hommage à Brahms à travers son Quintette pour clarinette et cordes, superbe dialogue entre les cordes et la clarinette, dont il tire toutes les qualités expressives.

Can we compose from nothing? Most likely. But it is just as relevant to think that there often exists, in the memory of a composer, an element that he reinvests, consciously or more voluntarily.
