Miranda Purcell

Lyrical creation, inspired by The Tempest by William Shakespeare, with music by Henry Purcell, conceived by Raphaël Pichon, Katie Mitchell and Cordelia Lynn, premiered at the Opéra Comique on September 25, 2017.

After Bach at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the shocking duo formed by the great British director Katie Mitchell and Raphaël Pichon, stormy conductor of the Pygmalion ensemble, undertakes to revisit the music of Henry Purcell, with the librettist Cordelia Lynn. Around the figure of Miranda, a character from Shakespeare's The Tempest , an omnipresent dead woman whose point of view conditions the action, they wanted to "tell a modern story according to the musical and operatic rules of the 17th century  ", in the words of Katie Mitchell. A story full of twists and turns, composed from excerpts from different scores by the father of English music, from Dido and Aeneas toThe Storm . Carried by a high-flying cast, this fascinating show magnifies Purcell's music, which is definitely timeless.
