A rarely performed masterpiece, Gioachino Rossini's Mosè in Egitto, takes center stage at the Bregenz Festival thanks to Lotte de Beer, who unearths this hidden gem of operatic literature for a spectacular production.

De Beer, one of the most sought-after directors of her generation (International Opera Newcomer Award 2015), tells the story of the biblical exodus together with the Dutch theater collective Hotel Modern. Their unique production concept for Moses in Egypt revolves around the ingenuity of Hotel Modern. The theater company creates its own reality through live animations, with which they depict crowd scenes and the parallel narratives of the people and slaves. Miniature cameras, thousands of figures, models of villages and towns and a spectacular aquarium installation present the story of the biblical plagues and the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt through the divided Red Sea in the Festspielhaus Bregenz - "a stroke of genius" (Der Standard).

The universally applicable narrative with its themes of migration and powerlessness has lost none of its urgency and topicality and is brought to life by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra conducted by Enrique Mazzola and the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Mazzola, who is a powerhouse on the podium, drives the symphony to peak performance. Soprano Mandy Fredrich captivates as Amaltea and British bass-baritone Andrew Foster-Williams as Pharaoh, alongside Goran Jurić, who is "a Mosè with bear-like power and softness" (Der Standard). Clarissa Costanzo (Elcia) proves to be an expressive soprano.
