The story of the famous, now classical musical title takes place in England. Professor Higgins meets street florist Lisa Doolittle. He understands this "simple" girl with her slang English as a rough diamond, worthy of his jeweler's hand. He therefore places a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he will teach Lisa to speak and act like a real "lady" within six months. In the end, he fails, but falls hopelessly in love with his mentee. Lisa also secretly loves the professor, but stubbornly rejects him because of his bloating and complacency. When first released on Broadway in 1859, the musical became an absolute hit and still enjoys great audience popularity.
