After the great success of the last New Year's Concert, Stefan Vladar will once again present a Vienna New Year's program with works by the Strauss family and music by Franz Lehár, Otto Nicolai and Robert Stolz. Star baritone Bo Skovhus will be heard as well as ensemble member Evmorfia Metaxaki.

Mr. Vladar, at the New Year's Concert you will conduct music from your hometown. How do you feel about this repertoire?

When you come from Vienna you grow up with this music. I've always liked operettas very much. After I performed a Vienna New Year's program two years ago when I started, which was very well received, it is a great pleasure for me to offer this repertoire to the audience again. The field of Viennese music is very broad. At the first concert, the Strauss family was almost exclusively on the program. You can fill many great concerts with the pieces that Johann Strauss father and son wrote alone.

 

This time there are also other composers: Otto Nicolai, Franz Lehár and Robert Stolz. The New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic is known all over the world. Do you have special traditions?

There are the standard encores that we will have too. Viennese music demands a certain kind of playing and two years ago I was thrilled with how quickly it was possible to make our orchestra sound like this. So I'm all the more looking forward to working on this music with the orchestra again. We will be joined by Bo Skovhus, a Viennese by choice and globally sought-after baritone who has been my song partner for 30 years. He started his career in Vienna and often sang operettas with great talent. We are very happy that he has agreed to give us a guest performance for this concert.
