Bertil is home alone again because his parents both had to go to work. Suddenly the boy hears small, tripping footsteps. It is Thäumling Nils Karlsson who actually wants to be called Nisse. He has just moved into a mouse hole in the wall of Bertil's room. Nisse reveals a trick to Bertil that can make him as small as he is. After the size difference has been overcome and Bertil himself has shrunk to the size of a thumb, they spend the whole day together.

Astrid Lindgren's story about the little boy from the city who finds a new friend in his loneliness was developed as part of the Young Opera Rhine-Ruhr cooperation and is imaginatively told
and presented by the singer Annika Boos and the violinist Karin Nakayama .

Following the performance, there will be an opportunity for a follow-up discussion with those involved in production. The production can be seen both in the Dortmund Opera and as a mobile production in Dortmund's kindergartens.
