The young Wagner countered the deaf ears, which only wanted to hear “ordinary Italian tones” in Bellini’s bel canto drama, that he knew of no comparable “soul painting than that of this wild Gallic seer, whom we see permeating all phases of passion”. And indeed: with the priestess, who serves her gods and therefore wants to remain chaste, who as a spiritual authority gives orientation to her subjugated people and at the same time stands by her love for one of the occupiers, even when he leaves her, Bellini depicts the disturbing double life of a bis woman capable of love to the extreme – embodied by Yolanda Auyanet in the revival of Wieler / Morabito's acclaimed production.
