Beethoven Symphonie Nr. 9 d-Moll op. 125 mit dem Schlusschor »An die Freude«

Eigentlich hätte Beethovens weltumarmende neunte Symphonie, die seit Jahren zum Kernrepertoire der Symphoniker Hamburg und Chefdirigent Sylvain Cambreling gehört, in London uraufgeführt werden sollen. Denn der Auftrag zur Komposition der Symphonien Nr. 9 und Nr. 10 kam bereits 1817 von der dortigen »Philharmonic Society«. Beethovens erhalten gebliebene Skizzenbücher aus dieser Phase vermitteln ein lebhaftes Bild davon, dass der Komponist fest mit seiner Reise nach England rechnete. Finanzielle Probleme sowie seelische und gesundheitliche Verstimmungen brachten Beethoven jedoch von diesem Vorhaben ab. Erst im Jahr 1822 konnte sich der Komponist wieder um das »Projekt London« kümmern. Doch die Arbeit an anderen großen Werken kam ihm dazwischen und so musste er die Philharmonische Gesellschaft in London immer wieder vertrösten.

Erst im Februar 1824 sandte Beethoven »wenigstens« seine Neunte nach London, wo sie am 21. Mai 1825 mit Sir George Smart als Dirigenten Premiere feierte. Die eigentliche Uraufführung hatte aber bereits am 7. Mai 1824 in Wien stattgefunden. In der »Allgemeinen musikalischen Zeitung« konnte man nach der Uraufführung ausschließlich Worte der Musikkritiker-Glückseligkeit lesen. Den ersten Satz beschreibt der anonyme Rezensent als »trotzig kühnes Allegro in d-Moll«, das »höchst geistreich erfunden und mit echter Athletenkraft ausgearbeitet« sei. Und am Ende der Symphonie saß »der Verfasser dieser Zeilen nun abgekühlt am Schreibepulte, doch unvergesslich wird ihm dieser Moment bleiben; Kunst und Wahrheit feiern hier ihren glänzendsten Triumph – und mit Fug und Recht könnte man sagen: non plus ultra!«

Actually, Beethoven's world-embracing ninth symphony, which has been part of the core repertoire of the Symphoniker Hamburg and chief conductor Sylvain Cambreling for years, should have been premiered in London. The commission to compose the 9th and 10th symphonies came as early as 1817 from the Philharmonic Society there. Beethoven's surviving sketchbooks from this phase give a vivid picture of the fact that the composer was counting on his trip to England. However, financial problems as well as mental and health problems dissuaded Beethoven from this plan. It was only in 1822 that the composer was able to take care of the "London Project" again. But work on other major works got in the way and so he had to put off the Philharmonic Society in London again and again.

It was not until February 1824 that Beethoven sent "at least" his Ninth to London, where it premiered on May 21, 1825 with Sir George Smart conducting. The actual premiere had already taken place on May 7, 1824 in Vienna. After the premiere, one could only read words of music critic bliss in the »Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung«. The anonymous reviewer describes the first movement as a "defiantly bold Allegro in D minor" that was "very wittily invented and worked out with real athletic power". And at the end of the symphony, “the author of these lines sat at his writing desk, cool, but this moment will remain unforgettable to him; Art and truth celebrate their most brilliant triumph here – and one could justifiably say: non plus ultra!«
