n Czech music we can observe a strong existential current manifesting itself in various forms, as we can see in the programme of this concert. 

The violin concerto The Wandering of a Little Soul was a mere unfinished project of Leoš Janáček (1854–1928). In May 1926, when he returned from an official visit to England, where his Sonata for Violin and Piano was played by the excellent violinist Adila Fachiri, he was impressed by her performance and considered composing a violin concerto, which he called “The Wandering of a Little Soul”. However, he soon abandoned the work in progress and put the manuscript score aside. It is a mysterious composition about which we know very little. Janáček later used parts of this concerto in the overture to the opera From the House of the Dead, and it is interesting that already in the score of the violin concerto we find the banging of the prison shackles – as if a prelude to the next opera. The reconstruction of this composition was performed by Miloš Štědroň and Leoš Faltus.

Miloslav Ištvan (1928–1990) was one of the most important composers working in Brno. He came on the scene at the end of the 1940s, when he responded to musical neoclassicism and neo-folklorism, especially to Bartók and Janáček, but in the early 1960s he turned to the so-called New Music. Subsequently, he developed his own specific creative approach, which he summarized in the publication The Method of Assembling Isolated Elements in Music. Incantations of the Time is a 1967 work in four movements for symphony orchestra and high and low voices of two reciters. The decision to compose for spoken word and orchestra was brought about by his collaboration with the theatre. The text is a montage of excerpts from Oldřich Mikulášek’s collection of poems, parts of the Bible and texts by an unknown Baroque writer. Ištvan’s composition reflecting on the transience of life is one of the most impressive pieces of the second half of the 1960s.

Bouquet of Flowers, a cantata for soloists, mixed and children’s choir and orchestra, was written by Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) in 1937. The 1930s were typical of the composer’s increased interest in Czech and Moravian folklore. Martinů took texts of a mainly ballad-like character from the collections of K. J. Erben and František Sušil. The eight movements are introduced by a distinctive overture and the individual numbers are divided by an orchestral Selanka reminiscent of cantorial pastorelas and an Intrados. It is a less frequently performed work by Martinů, although it is one of his most remarkable compositions. Here the composer combines neo-folk tendencies with neoclassical ones, inspired mainly by Igor Stravinsky. The premiere took place under the baton of Otakar Jeremiáš in Prague in 1938 and Martinů apparently heard it only from a radio broadcast. He attributed the work to his friend, the painter Jan Zrzavý.

In der tschechischen Musik lässt sich eine starke existentialistische Strömung beobachten, die sich in unterschiedlicher Form manifestiert, wie gerade das Programm dieses Konzerts illustriert.

Das Violinkonzert Wanderung einer kleinen Seele war ein bloßes unvollendetes Vorhaben von Leoš Janáček (1854–1928). Als er im Mai 1926 von einem offiziellen Besuch in England zurückkehrte, wo ihm die ausgezeichnete Geigerin Adila Fachiri seine Sonate für Violine und Klavier vorgespielt hatte, spielte er unter dem Eindruck ihrer Leistung mit dem Gedanken, ein Violinkonzert zu komponieren, welches er „Wanderung einer kleinen Seele“ nannte. Das begonnene Werk gab er jedoch bald auf und legte seine handschriftliche Partitur beiseite. Über diese geheimnisvolle Komposition wissen nur sehr wenig. Teile dieses Konzerts verwendete Janáček später im Vorspiel zur Oper Aus einem Totenhaus, wobei interessanterweise bereits in der Partitur des Violinkonzerts auch das Klirren der Fesseln der Sträflinge zu vernehmen ist – nachgerade als Vortrupp der künftigen Oper. Die Rekonstruktion dieses Werks leisteten Miloš Štědroň und Leoš Faltus.

Miloslav Ištvan (1928–1990) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Komponisten, die in Brno wirkten. Er betrat die Szene in den vierziger Jahren, als er auf den musikalischen Neoklassizismus und Neofolklorismus und insbesondere auf Bartók und Janáček reagierte, doch zu Beginn der sechziger Jahre wandte er sich der sog. Neuen Musik zu. In der Folge entwickelte er einen spezifischen Kompositionsansatz, den er in der Publikation Methode der Montage isolierter Elemente in der Musik zusammenfasste. Beschwörung der Zeit ist ein vierteiliges Werk für Symphonieorchester sowie eine höhere und eine tiefere Stimme zweier Rezitatoren aus dem Jahr 1967. Die Entscheidung, ein Werk für vorgetragenen Text und Orchester zu komponieren, resultierte aus seiner Zusammenarbeit mit dem Theater. Der Text entstand durch Kombination von Passagen aus einer Gedichtsammlung von Oldřich Mikulášek mit Bibelteilen und Texten eines unbekannten Barockschreibers. Ištvans Komposition, die der Vergänglichkeit des Lebens gewidmet ist, kann als eines der eindrucksvollsten Werke der zweiten Hälfte der sechziger Jahre gelten.

Den Blumenstrauß, eine Kantate für Solostimmen, gemischten und Kinderchor und Orchester, schrieb Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) im Jahr 1937. Die dreißiger Jahre waren charakterisiert durch ein gesteigertes Interesse des Komponisten an der böhmischen und mährischen Folklore. Die Texte überwiegend balladischen Charakters fand Martinů in Sammlungen von Karel Jaromír Erben und František Sušil. Die insgesamt acht Teile werden durch ein markantes Präludium eingeleitet, die einzelnen Nummern unterteilt durch eine orchestrale Idylle, die an die Pastoralen der Kantoren erinnert, und eine Intrada. Obgleich es sich um eine der bemerkenswertesten Kompositionen Martinůs handelt, wird das Werk eher selten gespielt. Der Komponist kombiniert hier virtuos neofolkloristische Tendenzen mit neoklassizistischen, die vor allem durch Igor Strawinsky inspiriert sind. Die Premiere fand 1938 unter der Leitung von Otakar Jeremiáš in Prag statt, während Martinů offenbar nur die Rundfunkübertragung hörte. Das Werk widmete er dem Maler Jan Zrzavý, mit dem ihn eine enge Freundschaft verband.

V české hudbě můžeme zaznamenat silný existencionální proud projevující se v rozličné podobě, jak můžeme sledovat právě v programu tohoto koncertu. 

Houslový koncert Putování dušičky byl pouhým nedokončeným záměrem Leoše Janáčka (1854–1928). Když se v květnu 1926 vrátil z oficiální návštěvy Anglie, kde mu jeho Sonátu pro housle a klavír hrála vynikající houslistka Adila Fachiri, uvažoval pod dojmem jejího výkonu o kompozici houslového koncertu, který nazval „Putování dušičky“. Rozpracované dílo však brzy opustil a rukopisnou partituru odložil. Je to tajemná skladba, o níž víme jen velmi málo. Části tohoto koncertu Janáček později použil v předehře k opeře Z mrtvého domu a je zajímavé, že už v partituře houslového koncertu nalezneme i údery vězeňských okovů – jakoby předvoj příští opery. Rekonstrukci této skladby provedli Miloš Štědroň a Leoš Faltus.

Miloslav Ištvan (1928–1990) patří k nejvýznamnějším skladatelům působícím v Brně. Na scénu přichází na sklonku čtyřicátých let, kdy reaguje na hudební neoklasicismus a neofolklorismus, především na Bartóka a Janáčka, ale počátkem šedesátých let se přiklonil k tzv. Nové hudbě. Následně si vytvořil svůj specifický přístup k tvorbě, který shrnul v publikaci Metoda montáže izolovaných prvků v hudbě. Zaklínání času je skladbou o čtyřech částech pro symfonický orchestr a vyšší a nižší hlas dvou recitátorů z roku 1967. Rozhodnutí komponovat pro přednášený text a orchestr přinesla jeho spolupráce s divadlem. Text vznikl montáží úryvků básní ze sbírky Oldřicha Mikuláška, částí bible a textů neznámého barokního pisatele. Ištvanova kompozice uvažující o pomíjivosti života je jednou z nejpůsobivějších skladeb druhé poloviny šedesátých let.

Kytici, kantátu pro sóla, smíšený a dětský sbor a orchestr napsal Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) v roce 1937. Třicátá léta jsou u skladatele typická zvýšeným zájmem o český a moravský folklor. Texty především baladického charakteru Martinů převzal ze sbírek K. J. Erbena a Františka Sušila. Celkem osm částí uvozuje výrazná předehra a jednotlivá čísla rozděluje orchestrální Selanka upomínající na kantorské pastorely a Intráda. Jde o méně uváděné Martinů dílo, přestože se jedná o jednu z jeho nejpozoruhodnějších kompozic. Skladatel zde znamenitě kombinuje neofolklorní tendence s neoklasickými, inspirovanými především Igorem Stravinským. Premiéra se konala pod taktovkou Otakara Jeremiáše v Praze v roce 1938 a Martinů ji zřejmě slyšel pouze z rozhlasového přenosu. Dílo připsal svému příteli, malíři Janu Zrzavému.
