Un os transformé en flûte dénonce l’assassin : c’est dans ce conte des frères Grimm que Mahler a puisé le matériau de Das klagende Lied. En préambule, sous les doigts virtuoses de David Fray, le concerto de Mozart en ré mineur, tonalité dramatique de l’ouverture du Don Giovanni.

D’un côté, un Mozart tourmenté, avec l’un de ses concertos pour piano les plus ténébreux, le vingtième, composé dans la même tonalité que le Requiem. De l’autre, Mahler qui compose une cantate, Das klagende Lied (Le Chant plaintif), hantée par la mort. Dans les deux cas, Mozart et Mahler usent de leur génie pour exprimer l’ineffable. Mozart est au sommet de son art et fait dialoguer éperdument son piano avec les couleurs sombres de l’orchestre. Mahler n’a que vingt ans et éblouit déjà par la parfaite alliance de la voix avec l’orchestre, il annonce ses grandes symphonies et ses Kindertotenlieder. Un concert élégiaque et hiératique.

A bone that turns into a flute and denounces the killer…, this is the Brothers Grimm tale on which Mahler’s Das klagende Lied was based. With the virtuoso fingers of David Fray, the concert opens with the dramatic tonality of Mozart’s Don Giovanni overture —his Piano Concerto in D Minor.

On the one hand: a tormented Mozart and one of his darkest piano concertos — his twentieth, composed in the same tonality as his Requiem.  On the other hand: Mahler, composing a cantata haunted by death, Das klagende Lied (Song of Lamentation). In both cases, we observe artists using their genius to express the ineffable. Mozart is at his peak, making the piano dialogue wildly with the dark moods of the orchestra. Mahler is but twenty years old yet already able to dazzle through this perfect alliance of voice and orchestra, announcing his great symphonies and his Kindertotenlieder. A grave, elegiac concert.
