Il n’est pas rare que les partitions inachevées soient aussi les plus accomplies : ainsi de la plus mystérieuse des symphonies schubertiennes, devenue emblématique du répertoire, et du chef-d’œuvre tardif de Bruckner, riche d’introspection métaphysique.

Un sombre motif aux cordes graves, une mélopée plaintive du hautbois : dès les premières mesures, l’Inachevée happe l’auditeur pour le projeter dans le mystère schubertien, où le chant se fait dramatique et pénétré de désolation, presque de terreur. Deux mouvements seulement, le second plus consolant, pour une « Inachevée », qui, bien loin d’être inaccomplie, constitue l’un des sommets du romantisme musical.

En regard, quelle meilleure réponse que la Neuvième de Bruckner, dont le compositeur, malade, ne peut venir à bout ? De cette œuvre dédiée « dem lieben Gott », « au bon Dieu », nous sont parvenus trois mouvements : un premier « solennel et mystérieux », où la tension est portée par des cuivres impérieux ; un second martelant, telle une dantesque course à l’abîme évoquant presque Stravinski ; puis un Adagio conclusif, testamentaire, dans lequel retentit un choral sous lequel le compositeur a inscrit la formule « Abschied vom Leben », « Adieu à la vie » : libre à chaque auditeur d’y entendre l’angoisse d’un mourant ou la confiante résignation d’un homme se remettant entre les mains de son créateur.

A sombre motif in the low strings, a plaintive oboe melody: from the opening bars, the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony draws us into Schubertian mystery, where song turns dramatic, penetrated by desolation verging on terror. Left with only two movements—the second more soothing than the first—this incomplete work is anything but unaccomplished, standing as one of the pinnacles of musical romanticism.

In counterpoint, what better reply than Bruckner’s Ninth, which the ailing composer was unable to finish? Of this opus dedicated to ‘dem lieben Gott’ (‘to the good Lord’), we have three movements: the ‘solemn and mysterious’ first, where the tension is carried by imperious horns; the hammering second, like a Dantean race to the abyss, reminiscent of Stravinsky; and then a concluding, testamentary Adagio, including a chorale under which the composer noted ‘Abschied vom Leben’ (‘Farewell to life’). Whether it reflects the anguish of a dying man or the trusting resignation of one placing himself in the hands of his creator, is up to each listener to decide.
