Orest ist ein Spross des antiken Geschlechts der Atriden, das sich über Generationen hinweg in einen Teufelskreis von Verbrechen und Rache verstrickt hat. In seinem radikalen, 1908 uraufgeführten Einakter Elektra schilderte Richard Strauss, wie sich Orest für die Ermordung seines Vaters Agamemnon rächt, indem er seine Mutter Klytämnestra und deren Liebhaber Ägisth tötet.

Hundert Jahre später widmete sich der deutsche Komponist Manfred Trojahn der Fortsetzung dieser Geschichte: Anders als seine fanatisierte Schwester Elektra, die Gerechtigkeit um jeden Preis fordert, hadert Orest nach seiner grausamen Tat mit dem Schicksal. Er fühlt sich schuldig, obwohl er den Mordauftrag vom Gott Apollo erhielt und diesem blind Folge leistete. An Orest zeigt sich auf exemplarische Weise der Konflikt zwischen Fremd- und Selbstbestimmung, was ihn nicht nur für die Freiheitsphilosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts, sondern bis in die heutige Zeit zu einer politisch und psychologisch brisanten Figur macht. Am Ende von Trojahns Oper verweigert sich Orest dem Kreislauf des Mordens. Er begreift, dass er mit seiner Schuld leben muss, um den Zwängen der Familie zu entfliehen. Es ist die Liebe, die ihn zu dieser Erkenntnis führt. Mit seiner brennend intensiven und dichten Klangwelt gelingt es dem Komponisten Manfred Trojahn, den Zuschauer ganz nah an den Wahnsinn zu führen, der sich in Orests Kopf abspielt. Die erste Aufführung seiner Oper in Amsterdam wurde von der Opernwelt zur «Uraufführung des Jahres 2012» gewählt. Mit Hans Neuenfels inszeniert ein Grossmeister seines Fachs zum ersten Mal im Opernhaus Zürich. Für die Hauptpartie konnten wir den Bariton Georg Nigl gewinnen, den die Opernwelt zum «Sänger des Jahres 2015» kürte.

Orestes is a scion of the ancient Atrid family who have been caught in a vicious cycle of crime and revenge for generations. In his radical one-act play Elektra , which premiered in 1908 , Richard Strauss described how Orestes avenged himself for the murder of his father Agamemnon by killing his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisth.

A hundred years later, the German composer Manfred Trojahn dedicated himself to the continuation of this story: Unlike his fanatical sister Elektra, who demands justice at any price, Orestes struggles with fate after his cruel deed. He feels guilty, although he received the murder order from the god Apollo and blindly followed it. Orestes shows in an exemplary way the conflict between foreign and self-determination, which makes him a politically and psychologically explosive figure not only for the philosophy of freedom of the 20th century, but even today. At the end of Trojahn's opera, Orestes rejects the cycle of murder. He realizes that he has to live with his guilt in order to escape from family pressures. It is love that leads him to this realization. With his burning, intense and dense world of sound, the composer Manfred Trojahn succeeds in leading the audience very close to the madness that is taking place in Orestes' head. The first performance of his opera in Amsterdam was voted "World Premiere of the Year 2012" by Opernwelt.
