Orfeo ed Euridice fu composto da Gluck su un libretto di Ranieri de’ Calzabigi tratto dalla mitologia greca. Appartiene al genere dell’azione teatrale, cioè un’opera su scala ridotta. Il lavoro, che debuttò al Burgtheater di Vienna il 5 ottobre 1762, è considerato la prima di quelle opere “riformate” in cui Gluck si propose di sostituire alle trame intricate e al canto troppo virtuosistico dell’opera seria una “nobile semplicità” tanto nella musica quanto nella drammaturgia. Tuttavia il convenzionale lieto fine, l’uso di strumenti arcaici e il ruolo protagonistico assegnato al contralto castrato Gaetano Guadagni, rimandano al più antico genere dell’intrattenimento di corte barocco. Nel 1774 Gluck rielaborò la partitura come Orphée et Eurydice, con varie alterazioni nel riparto vocale e nell’orchestrazione volte a soddisfare il gusto francese con sopratitoli in italiano e in inglese nuovo allestimento Fondazione Teatro La Fenice

Orfeo ed Euridice was composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck to an Italian libretto by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi, based on Greek mythology. It belongs to the genre of azione teatrale, meaning a smaller-scale opera. The piece debuted at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762. Orfeo ed Euridice rankes as the first of Gluck’s “reform” operas, in which he attempted to replace the intricate plots and overly virtuoso singing of opera seria with a “noble simplicity” in both the music and the drama. However, the perfunctory happy ending, the use of archaic instruments in the orchestra, and the main role allotted to the alto castrato Gaetano Guadagni, point back to the earlier genre of Baroque court entertainment. In 1774, Gluck reworked his score as Orphée et Eurydice, with several alterations in vocal casting and orchestration to suit the French taste.
