Von Anfang an steht der Mythos von Orpheus und Eurydike ganz oben auf der Hitliste der Opernkomponisten. Nach Claudio Monteverdi war es vor allem Christoph Willibald Gluck, der ihn unsterblich machte: Auf ebenso lyrische wie dramatische Weise erzählt sein Meisterwerk »Orfeo ed Euridice« die Geschichte des Sängers, der in die Unterwelt hinabsteigt, um seine geliebte Frau von den Toten zurückzufordern.

Thomas Hengelbrock und seine Balthasar-Neumann-Ensembles haben sich für die italienische Erstfassung der Oper entschieden, die 1762 – zwölf Jahre vor der ebenso bekannten französischen – in Wien uraufgeführt wurde. Wie zu Glucks Zeiten wird in dieser historisch informierten Aufführung die für Altstimme komponierte Rolle des Orfeo von einem Mann gesungen: von Jakub Józef Orliński, einem der derzeit begehrtesten Countertenöre der Welt. Mit Regula Mühlemann hat der polnische Shooting-Star eine prominente und stimmgewaltige Partnerin an seiner Seite. Zusammen mit Elena Galitskaya bilden sie ein Ensemble, wie man es sich kaum idealer für dieses Werk vorstellen könnte.

From the very beginning, the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has been at the top of opera composers' hit lists. After Claudio Monteverdi, it was above all Christoph Willibald Gluck who made him immortal: his masterpiece »Orfeo ed Euridice« tells the story of the singer, who descends into the underworld to reclaim his beloved wife from the dead, in a way that is as lyrical as it is dramatic.

Thomas Hengelbrock and his Balthasar Neumann Ensembles chose the first Italian version of the opera, which premiered in Vienna in 1762 – twelve years before the equally well-known French version. As in Gluck's time, in this historically informed performance the role of Orfeo, composed for contralto, is sung by one man: Jakub Józef Orliński, currently one of the most sought-after countertenors in the world. With Regula Mühlemann, the Polish shooting star has a prominent and powerful-voiced partner at his side. Together with Elena Galitskaya they form an ensemble that could hardly be imagined more ideal for this work.
