Once a great warrior, brave Orlando now devotes all his heroism to winning the love of the beautiful Angelica. When he realizes that Angelica has already given her heart to the Moor Medoro, Orlando goes mad with jealousy. In his blind rage he destroys almost everything that is dear to him. Can a magical intervention bring him back to his senses?

Handel's reworking of the classic heroic epic was not shown in the original version for a good 250 years after the premiere in 1733. The ideas were too modern for that time, too unusual structure and composition. However, the constant alternation between seriousness and subtle humor as well as the sharp analysis of human nature has rightly brought the work back to the big stages in recent years.
