Dessert anecdote Created in 1858, Orphée aux Enfers was the source of a scandal. Its libretto based on a satire of mythology, it was condemned by many critics who saw in it a desecration of an essential heritage. Emile Zola himself, in the opening scene of his novel Nana, describes the premiere of an operetta entitled La Blonde Vénus – a fictional double of Orpheus in the Underworld – in highly derogatory terms: “This carnival of the gods, the Olympus dragged through the mud, an entire religion, an entire poetry flouted, seemed an exquisite treat. The fever of irreverence won over the educated world. We trampled on the legend, we broke the ancient images. For a long time, in the theater, the public had wallowed in stupidity more disrespectful. The work was nevertheless a huge public success, counting more than 1000 performances during Offenbach's lifetime.

Dessert anecdote
Créé en 1858, Orphée aux Enfers fut
à l’origine d’un scandale. Son livret
reposant sur une satire de la mythologie,
il fut condamné par de nombreux critiques
qui y voyaient une profanation d’un
héritage essentiel. Emile Zola lui-même,
dans la scène d’ouverture de son roman
Nana, décrit la première d’une opérette
intitulée La Blonde Vénus – double fictif
d’Orphée aux Enfers – en des termes
très dépréciatifs: «Ce carnaval des dieux,
l’Olympe traîné dans la boue, toute une
religion, toute une poésie bafouée,
semblèrent un régal exquis. La fièvre de
l’irrévérence gagnait le monde lettré. On
piétinait sur la légende, on cassait les
antiques images. Depuis longtemps, au
théâtre, le public ne s’était vautré dans
de la bêtise plus irrespectueuse. » L’œuvre
connut néanmoins un immense succès
public, comptabilisant plus de 1000
représentations du vivant d’Offenbach.
