Dass der als Honighändler getarnte Gott der Unterwelt Pluto die schöne Eurydike der Erde entlockt, ist ihrem Mann Orpheus gar nicht so unrecht. Fühlt er sich nämlich gekränkt durch ihre mangelnde Begeisterung für seinen Musikgenius. Doch es kommt die personifizierte Öffentliche Meinung daher und macht ihn darauf aufmerksam, dass er um seine widerrechtlich abhanden gekommene Frau zu kämpfen hat. Andernfalls würde sie seinen Stand und sein Berufsleben vernichten. So begibt sich Orpheus zum Olymp. Jupiter hat allerdings selbst Interesse an der Schönen und auch daran, mit ihr seine himmlische Vormachtstellung gegenüber der Unterwelt zu demonstrieren.

Antiken heroischen Idealen steht eine dekadente Entladung bourgeoiser Gelüste entgegen. Es herrschen unbegrenzte Liebeslust, Trinkgelage und frivole Tänze. Ausgelassenheit und Stärke spiegeln sich auch in der Partitur und den virtuosen Soprankoloraturen von Eurydike wider. Mit Orpheus in der Unterwelt gelingt Jacques Offenbach der Durchbruch als Komponist sowie ein Modell musikalischer Mythentravestie, das im wohl bekanntesten Cancan der Musikgeschichte gipfelt.

The fact that the god of the underworld Pluto, disguised as a honey dealer, lures the beautiful Eurydice out of the earth is not entirely unfair to her husband Orpheus. He feels offended by her lack of enthusiasm for his musical genius. But the personified public opinion comes along and draws his attention to the fact that he has to fight for his illegally lost wife. Otherwise she would destroy his station and his professional life. Orpheus goes to Olympus. However, Jupiter himself has an interest in the beautiful and also in using her to demonstrate his celestial supremacy over the underworld.

A decadent discharge of bourgeois desires stands in contrast to the heroic ideals of antiquity. There are unlimited lust for love, drinking bouts and frivolous dances. Exuberance and strength are also reflected in the score and Eurydice's virtuoso soprano coloraturas. With Orpheus in the Underworld , Jacques Offenbach achieved his breakthrough as a composer and a model of musical myth travesty that culminates in what is probably the most famous cancan in music history.
