A community struggling to survive. A way of life under threat. A shape-shifting heroine with conflicting loyalties and an innocent stranger, unaware that his destiny is to bring salvation through new-found compassion.

Wagner’s final masterpiece is a profoundly moving music drama, rooted in a potent personal mix of Arthurian legend and religious imagery.

It is presented tonight in a semi-staged performance by Opera North, whose performances here of the composer’s Ring Cycle were rapturously received in 2016.

An all-star cast is led by the tenor Tony Spence in the title role, with Katerina Karneus as Kundry, Brindley Sherratt as Gurnemanz and Eric Greene as Klingsor.

On the podium is Richard Farnes, reunited with the company for which he was music director between 2004 and 2016.
