Kiedy ból, zarówno fizyczny, jak i psychiczny, staje się tak nieznośny, że pojawia się pytanie o sens, mówimy o cierpieniu. Cierpienie jest centralnym problemem historii Zbawienia, rozważanym rokrocznie od dwóch tysięcy lat. Poznanie sensu ofiary Chrystusa to istota Ewangelii, to istota rozważań pasyjnych.
Dzisiejszy świat jest pełen cierpienia i przemocy, dlatego pytanie o sens jest wciąż powtarzane. Sens zdaje się być pojęciem relatywnym, objawia się w pełni tylko wobec wiary niezachwialnej. Lecz ta dana była tylko Chrystusowi. Człowiek wątpi i pyta, niczym Piotr i Piłat w Pasji według św. Jana. Czym jest prawda? – pyta Piłat. Czy legitymizuje ona wszelkie działania? – zastanawiamy się, oglądając doniesienia o kolejnych tragediach rozgrywających się w XXI wieku od Nowego Jorku po Islamabad, od Brukseli po Abudżę.
Zderzenie niezachwianej wiary Chrystusa i pełnego wątpliwości Piłata stanowi sedno parateatralnej inscenizacji Bachowskiego arcydzieła przygotowanego w koprodukcji z Klarafestival. Pasja otoczona jest komentarzem akcji scenicznej, instalacji wideo, a także kompozycji współczesnych, nadających dziełu barokowemu kontekst współczesny. Prolog jest autorstwa czołowej belgijskiej kompozytorki Annelies Van Parys, zaś w miejscu kazania – pomiędzy pierwszą a drugą częścią dzieła – pojawi się utwór izraelsko-palestyńskiego kompozytora Samira Odeh-Tamimiego L’Apokalypse Arabe I do tekstu libańskiej poetki Etel Adnan, która swój nowatorski w formie poemat napisała pod wpływem wojny domowej w swoim kraju. Konflikty targające regionem nie wygasły, przez co poemat po czterdziestu niemal latach pozostaje boleśnie aktualny.
Wszystkie warstwy spektaklu, bogate konteksty religijne i cywilizacyjne, przypominają nam, że żadna ze współczesnych cywilizacji nie wyzbyła się uprzedzeń, nienawiści, nietolerancji religijnej ani rasizmu. Jest manifestem artystycznym wymierzonym przeciw fanatyzmowi religijnemu.

When the pain, both physical and mental, becomes so unbearable that the question of meaning arises, we speak of suffering. Suffering is the central problem of the history of salvation, considered every year for two thousand years. Learning the meaning of Christ's sacrifice is the essence of the Gospel, it is the essence of passion considerations.
Today's world is full of suffering and violence, which is why the question of meaning is repeated over and over again. Meaning seems to be a relative concept, it reveals itself fully only in the face of unwavering faith. But this was given only to Christ. Man doubts and asks, like Peter and Pilate in the Passion according to St. John. What is the truth? asks Pilate. Does it legitimize all actions? – we wonder as we watch reports of more tragedies taking place in the 21st century from New York to Islamabad, from Brussels to Abuja.
The clash of Christ's unwavering faith and Pilate's doubtful faith is the crux of the para-theatrical staging of Bach's masterpiece co-produced with Klarafestival. Passion is surrounded by a commentary on the stage action, a video installation, as well as contemporary compositions, giving the Baroque work a contemporary context. The prologue is by the leading Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys, and in place of the sermon - between the first and the second part of the work - there will be a piece by Israeli-Palestinian composer Samir Odeh-Tamimi L'Apokalypse Arabe Ito the text of the Lebanese poet Etel Adnan, who wrote her innovative poem under the influence of the civil war in her country. The conflicts raging in the region have not died out, which is why the poem remains painfully relevant after almost forty years.
All the layers of the performance, the rich religious and civilizational contexts, remind us that none of the contemporary civilizations has gotten rid of prejudice, hatred, religious intolerance and racism. It is an artistic manifesto against religious fanaticism.
