HERR, UNSER HERRSCHER
Die erste Passionsaufführung des Thomaskantors Johann Sebastian Bach erklang zu Karfreitag, dem 7. April 1724. Kurzfristig wurde der Gottesdienst aus der Thomas- in die Nikolaikirche verlegt. Was den Leipzigern entgegentönte, ist verstörend: Herr! Herr! Herr!, ruft der Chor in das dunkle g-Moll des aufgewühlten Orchestervorspiels hinein, erst eindringlich auf den Schlag, dann hadernd dagegen, als stemme er sich gegen das unausweichlich Bevorstehende. Mühsam windet sich unser Herrscher als Melisma empor. Vergeblich ringen die Sänger sich die Huldigung ab: dessen Ruhm in allen Landen ist. Kein Herrscherglanz fällt ins Passionsdunkel dieser Musik.

OH MENSCH
Ein Jahr später ersetzte Bach das verzweifelte: Herr, unser Herrscher! durch O Mensch, bewein ... in mildem Es-Dur. Aufsteigende hohe Stimmen treten dem niedersinkenden Bass entgegen, ein Choral verbreitet Ruhe und Beständigkeit und bindet die revidierte Passion in den ersten Choralkantaten-Jahrgang ein. Auch die Schlüsse könnten unterschiedlicher kaum sein. Die zweite Fassung mündet wiederum in eine Choralbearbeitung. Für Christe, Du Lamm Gottes griff Bach auf einen Kantatensatz zurück – schwer seufzende Musik, mehr Klage als Anrufung. Zwar weicht das lähmende Adagio in g-Moll einem helleren Andante, doch ein zuversichtliches, affirmatives Ende bleibt aus. Was so gefasst begann, verliert sich im Ungewissen.

ERHÖRE MICH
In Bachs erster Leipziger Passionsmusik hingegen steht dem dunkel aufgewühlten Eingangsein schlichter, warm leuchtender Schlusschoral entgegen: Ach Herr, lass Dein lieb Engelein ... Tröstliches, zuversichtliches Es-Dur markiert hier den tonartlichen Ziel- und nicht den Ausgangspunkt. Lobpreis hat das letzte Wort, doch die Musik widerspricht nicht mehr wie zu Beginn, sondern unterstreicht, indem alle Instrumente sich den Singstimmen anschließen: Dich will ich preisen ewiglich!

The first performance of the Passion by the Thomaskantor Johann Sebastian Bach was heard on Good Friday, April 7, 1724. The service was temporarily moved from the Thomaskirche to the Nikolaikirche. What the people of Leipzig heard is disturbing: Lord! Mister! Mister! , the choir calls into the dark G minor of the agitated orchestral prelude, first insistently on the beat, then quarreling against it, as if braving itself against the inevitable impending. Laboriously, our ruler winds his way up as a melisma. In vain the singers wring the homage from each other: whose fame is in all lands. No ruler's splendor falls into the passion darkness of this music.

A year later, Bach replaced the desperate: Lord, our ruler! through O man, weep ... in a mild E flat major. Rising high voices counter the sinking bass, a chorale spreads calm and stability and integrates the revised Passion into the first choral cantatas. The conclusions could hardly be more different. The second version again ends in a chorale arrangement. For Christe, Du Lamm Gottes , Bach resorted to a cantata movement – ​​heavily sighing music, more lamentation than invocation. Although the crippling Adagio in G minor gives way to a brighter Andante, there is no confident, affirmative ending. What began so calmly is lost in the unknown.

HEAR ME
In Bach's first Leipzig Passion Music, on the other hand, the dark, turbulent opening is contrasted with a simple, warmly glowing final chorale: Oh Lord, let your dear angel ... Comforting, confident E flat major marks the tonal goal and not the starting point. Praise has the last word, but the music no longer contradicts itself as it did at the beginning, but emphasizes that all instruments join the singing voices: I will praise you forever!
