PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE | Staatsoper Unter den Linden

Mit der Uraufführung von »Pelléas und Mélisande« 1902 forderte Claude Debussy die Hörgewohnheiten seiner Zeitgenossen heraus: Seine Instrumentationskunst ist raffiniert und innovativ, zudem überführt er die Wagnersche Leitmotivtechnik in eine subtile Klangfarbendramaturgie und beschreibt Atmosphären und Seelenstimmungen, die sich der Beschreibung entziehen und selbst die Musik oft nur anzudeuten vermag.

Die stoffliche Grundlage ist das gleichnamige Drama des flämischen Symbolisten Maurice Maeterlinck, eine tragisch endende märchenhafte Dreiecksgeschichte um die Stiefbrüder Golaud und Pelléas und die von beiden geliebte geheimnisvolle Mélisande. Die Handlung bleibt im Vagen, dafür werden psychische Tiefen ausgelotet. Die Tragödie findet nicht als offener Konflikt, sondern als unterschwelliger seelischer Prozess statt. Debussys Musik bleibt ebenso verhalten und nähert sich immer wieder der Stille. Unter der monochromen Oberfläche schillern jedoch die vielfältigsten Farben, und Debussy gelingt es, die rätselhafte, morbide Atmosphäre auf kongeniale Weise in Musik umzusetzen. 1991 hat Ruth Berghaus, einer der größten Regisseurinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts, das Bühnenwerk an der Staatsoper Unter den Linden inszeniert, mit viel Sinn für seine besonderen atmosphärischen Tönungen.

With the premiere of "Pelléas und Mélisande" in 1902, Claude Debussy challenged the listening habits of his contemporaries: his art of instrumentation is sophisticated and innovative, he also transfers the Wagnerian leitmotif technique into a subtle dramaturgy of tonal colors and describes atmospheres and moods of the soul that elude description and even the Music can often only suggest.

The material basis is the drama of the same name by the Flemish symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck, a tragically ending fairytale love triangle about the stepbrothers Golaud and Pelléas and the mysterious Mélisande, whom they both love. The plot remains vague, but psychological depths are explored. The tragedy does not take place as an open conflict, but as a subliminal mental process. Debussy's music also remains subdued and repeatedly approaches silence. However, beneath the monochrome surface, the most diverse colors shimmer, and Debussy succeeds in translating the enigmatic, morbid atmosphere into music in a congenial way. In 1991 Ruth Berghaus, one of the greatest directors of the 20th century, staged the stage work at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden,
