In this staged song cycle, composer Tyshawn Sorey and director Peter Sellars break with the charming high gloss of the melodies that made Baker famous. In a cage, dancing in a banana skirt, and singing about her 'home' in Africa, the African-American performer Joséphine Baker had her breakthrough in France in the 1920s.
