In this staged song cycle, composer Tyshawn Sorey and director Peter Sellars break with the charming high gloss of the melodies that made Baker famous. Instead, Perle Noire is a gripping and layered interplay of song, word art, instrumental interludes, improvisation and elements of music from Joséphine's native country, such as the Charleston.

In a cage, dancing in a banana skirt, and singing about her 'home' in Africa, the African-American performer Joséphine Baker had her breakthrough in France in the 1920s. She went on to become one of the most famous and highest paid artists in the world. Paradoxically, by making herself the exotic object of European fantasies, Baker was able to free herself from a hopeless and miserable existence in her native St. Louis. Her pursuit of an independent and dignified existence was not limited to her personal life: she also played an important role in the French Resistance during WWII and in the post-war civil rights movement in the US.
