Si notre époque contemporaine a fait de Farinelli une légende (à juste titre, car il était un chanteur phénoménal selon tous les témoignages), elle tend à sous-estimer son grand rival, Giovanni Carestini, que d’aucuns admiraient pour la perfection absolue de son chant selon les propos du compositeur Johann Adolf Hasse. Farinelli travailla avec maints grands auteurs mais jamais avec Haendel – à Londres, il fut même membre de la troupe rivale de celle du Caro Sassone. À l’inverse, Carestini créa plusieurs des grands rôles haendéliens. Philippe Jaroussky ressuscite magistralement l’art de ces deux monstres sacrés du chant, puisant dans les chefs-d’œuvre de Haendel mais aussi Porpora, le professeur de Farinelli et compositeur courtisé par toute l’Europe. Deux airs suffisent à donner un aperçu des hauteurs musicales sur lesquelles volaient ces géants : l’impalpable « Alto Giove » extrait du Polifemo de Porpora et le bouleversant « Scherza infida » tiré de l’Ariodante de Haendel. Le XVIIIe siècle était décidément une époque bénie des dieux, capable de produire des voix de cette envergure et des génies aussi inspirés. Entouré des musiciens du Concert de la Loge, dirigé par le virtuose du violon, Julien Chauvin, Philippe Jaroussky est sans doute le chanteur actuel le plus apte à rendre justice aux sublimes lignes vocales et à la virtuosité transcendante de ce temps.

If our contemporary age has made Farinelli a legend (and rightly so, for he was a phenomenal singer by all accounts), it tends to underestimate his great rival, Giovanni Carestini, whom some admired for the absolute perfection of its song according to the words of the composer Johann Adolf Hasse. Farinelli worked with many great authors but never with Handel – in London, he was even a member of the troupe rivaling that of Caro Sassone. Conversely, Carestini created several of the great Handelian roles. Philippe Jaroussky masterfully revives the art of these two sacred singing monsters, drawing on the masterpieces of Handel but also Porpora, Farinelli's teacher and composer courted throughout Europe. Two tunes are enough to give a glimpse of the musical heights over which these giants flew: the impalpable "Alto Giove  " taken from Porpora's Polifemo and the moving "Scherza infida  " taken from the Ariodanteof Handel. The 18th century was definitely a time blessed by the gods, capable of producing voices of this stature and such inspired geniuses. Surrounded by the musicians of the Concert de la Loge, directed by the virtuoso of the violin, Julien Chauvin, Philippe Jaroussky is undoubtedly the current singer best able to do justice to the sublime vocal lines and transcendent virtuosity of his time.
