Philippe Jordan gehört zu den erfolgreichsten Schweizer Dirigenten; er war Chefdirigent an der Pariser Opéra und bei den Wiener Symphonikern, noch bis 2025 ist er Musikdirektor der Wiener Staatsoper. Nun kommt er wieder einmal nach Zürich – mit Werken von Wagner und Schumann und einer Klangvorstellung, die denkbar weit entfernt ist vom Klischee der opulent aufgeladenen Romantik. Schlank, transparent, schlackenlos: So gestaltet er seine Interpretationen. Wagner und Schumann kannten sich übrigens persönlich; ihr Verhältnis sei «ziemlich freundlich», schrieb der Kritiker Eduard Hanslick, auch politisch stimmten sie ziemlich überein. Allerdings habe es Schumann irritiert, dass Wagner so viel rede – während Wagner umgekehrt Schumanns ausgiebiges Schweigen sonderbar fand. Dass sie auch musikalisch ganz unterschiedliche Vorstellungen hatten, wird in diesem Konzert nicht zu überhören sein.

Philippe Jordan is one of the most successful Swiss conductors; he was chief conductor at the Paris Opéra and with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and he is still music director of the Vienna State Opera until 2025. Now he is coming to Zurich once again – with works by Wagner and Schumann and a sound that is conceivably far removed from the cliché of opulently charged romanticism. Lean, transparent, slag-free: this is how he shapes his interpretations. Incidentally, Wagner and Schumann knew each other personally; their relationship was "quite friendly", wrote the critic Eduard Hanslick, and they were also quite in agreement politically. However, Schumann found it irritating that Wagner talked so much – while Wagner, conversely, found Schumann's extensive silence strange. The fact that they also had very different musical ideas will not be overheard in this concert.
