One of the most sought-after pianists of the time is the German Martin Helmchen, who this evening is the guest of the Copenhagen Phil with his eminent excess of both piano technique and musicality. On this evening's occasion, the orchestra has been reinforced by the next generation of orchestral musicians from Det Kgl. Danish Music Conservatory - to the tunes of masterpieces by Brahms and Berlioz.

Coveted Martin Helmchen is a guest of the Copenhagen Phil and is the soloist in Brahms' demanding and monumental Piano Concerto No. 1. Swiss Stefan Blunier stands on the conductor's podium for the first time and has chosen one of the most colorful, bubbly and unpredictable works in orchestral literature as the evening's main course: Masterful Symphonie Fantastique .

Berlioz decides in 1830 to set a frustrated love affair to music - "An episode in an artist's life in five episodes" he calls his fantastic program symphony. The work becomes a milestone in the history of music, and the first performance in 1830 shook the French audience with the completely unheard-of effects of the music, the violent story and the completely new and different approach to the symphonic form with plenty of challenges for all instrument groups in the orchestra. And it works to this day.

En af tidens mest efterspurgte pianister er tyske Martin Helmchen, der denne aften gæster Copenhagen Phil med sit eminente overskud af både klaverteknik og musikalitet. Orkestret er i aftenens anledning forstærket af den næste generation af orkestermusikere fra Det Kgl. Danske Musikkonservatorium – til tonerne af mesterværker af Brahms og Berlioz.

Eftertragtede Martin Helmchen gæster Copenhagen Phil og er solist i Brahms’ krævende og monumentale klaverkoncert nr. 1. Schweiziske Stefan Blunier står på dirigentpodiet for første gang og har valgt et af orkesterlitteraturens mest farverige, boblende og uforudsigelige værker, som aftenens hovedret: Mesterlige Symphonie Fantastique.

Berlioz beslutter sig i 1830 for at sætte en frustreret forelskelse i musik – “En episode i en kunstners liv i fem episoder” kalder han sin fantastiske programsymfoni. Værket bliver en milepæl i musikhistorien, og uropførelsen i 1830 rystede det franske publikum med musikkens helt uhørte effekter, den voldsomme historie og den fuldstændig nye og anderledes tilgang til den symfoniske form med masser af udfordringer for alle instrumentgrupper i orkestret. Og det virker den dag i dag.
