The opera The Queen of Spades is an exciting musical and psychological thriller, cast according to the famous trinity formula "three - seven - ace", 3 - 7 - 1. All three of her actions, all seven of her paintings are permeated with a single theme that tormented Tchaikovsky all his life, - the theme of absolute evil, which manifests itself as fate and all-conquering death. The heroes of the opera experience fear - and at the same time they evoke it in each other: “What a terrible person he is,” says the elderly Countess about Herman, who, in turn, the gambler Chekalinsky calls “a monster”. In the libretto written by the composer's brother Modest based on Pushkin's ironic secular story, the word "terrible" is repeated dozens of times. Along with fear, the categories associated with it and consonant with it are subjected to deep artistic comprehension: strangeness, passion and suffering. Herman's borderline disorder progresses to the stage of irreversible insanity, the personality disintegrates under the influence of manic passion, the fix idea, the obsessive desire to know the secret of the cards, to comprehend the patterns of rock and thereby replay it. When Herman and the Countess look at each other in a daze, Nietzsche's famous aphorism about the abyss, into which it is dangerous to peer, is recalled, because it also looks at you, fascinates and destroys. Only love can save you from falling into the abyss: "Death, I don't want you!" - Herman fights off his obsession, drawing a real angel, Lisa, into the fight against internal demons. But the forces are unequal, Liza, like Herman, follows the path of self-destruction, she also has a fixed idea - to sacrifice all of herself to her beloved, merge with him in compassion (“I am saddened by your sadness and cry with your tears”), become his wife-slave . Nothing will stop her on this path: “Whoever you are, I am still yours!” The gigantic amplitude of the characters' experiences - from frustration to euphoria, from ecstasy to despair - is conveyed by the brilliant music, written, according to Tchaikovsky, "with self-forgetfulness and pleasure" in just forty-four days. The Queen of Spades is a dramaturgically impeccable opera-symphony that combines late-romantic super-emotionality, juicy genre paintings and nostalgic stylization of Rococo era music.

The triumphant world premiere of Tchaikovsky's penultimate opera took place at the Mariinsky Theater in 1890. Now the theater is running a performance by Alexei Stepanyuk, staged in 2015 on a new stage. It is permeated with the atmosphere of a ghostly and majestic northern city. The scenographic leitmotifs play on the textbook signs of St. Petersburg: columns, sculptures, a granite ball. Luxurious costumes contrast with the strict graphics of the scenery. The directors borrowed a Napoleonic motif from Pushkin's text, presenting Herman as a man with unbridled ambitions, a proud man "with the profile of Napoleon and the soul of Mephistopheles." Trying to compensate for his loneliness with power and wealth, Herman violates the fundamental moral law formulated by his contemporary, the philosopher Kant: always treat a person as an end, and never as a means. And yet the last vision of the dying hero is not the infernal Queen of Spades, but the "heavenly creature" - Liza. Life-game is over, and only after losing everything, Herman finds peace.Christina Batyushina

Опера «Пиковая дама» – это захватывающий музыкально-психологический триллер, отлитый по знаменитой троичной формуле «тройка – семерка – туз», 3 – 7 – 1. Все три ее действия, все семь ее картин пронизаны единой темой, мучившей Чайковского всю жизнь, – темой абсолютного зла, являющего себя как фатум и всепобедительная смерть. Герои оперы испытывают страх – и одновременно вызывают его друг у друга: «Какой он страшный», – говорит о Германе престарелая Графиня, которую, в свою очередь, картежник Чекалинский называет «страшилищем». В либретто, написанном братом композитора Модестом по ироничной светской повести Пушкина, слово «страшно» повторяется десятки раз. Вместе со страхом глубокому художественному осмыслению подвергнуты сопряженные с ним и созвучные ему категории: странность, страсть и страдание. Пограничное расстройство Германа прогрессирует до стадии необратимого безумия, личность распадается под действием маниакальной страсти, идеи фикс, обсессивного желания узнать тайну карт, постичь закономерность рока и тем самым переиграть его. Когда Герман и Графиня в оцепенении смотрят друг на друга, вспоминается знаменитый афоризм Ницше про бездну, в которую опасно всматриваться, ибо она тоже смотрит на тебя, завораживает и уничтожает. От падения в бездну может спасти только любовь: «Смерть, я не хочу тебя!» – отбивается Герман от своего наваждения, втягивая сущего ангела, Лизу, в борьбу с внутренними демонами. Но силы неравны, Лиза, как и Герман, идет по пути саморазрушения, у нее тоже есть идея фикс – пожертвовать всю себя возлюбленному, слиться с ним в сострадании («Печалюсь вашей я печалью и плачу вашею слезой»), стать его супругой-рабой. На этом пути ее ничто не остановит: «Кто б ни был ты, я все­таки твоя!» Гигантскую амплитуду переживаний героев – от фрустрации до эйфории, от экстаза до отчаяния – передает гениальная музыка, написанная, по признанию Чайковского, «с самозабвением и наслаждением» всего за сорок четыре дня. «Пиковая дама» – драматургически безукоризненная опера-симфония, сочетающая позднеромантическую сверхэмоциональность, сочные жанровые картины и ностальгическую стилизацию музыки эпохи рококо.

Триумфальная мировая премьера предпоследней оперы Чайковского состоялась в Мариинском театре в 1890 году. Ныне в театре идет спектакль Алексея Степанюка, поставленный в 2015 году на новой сцене. Он пронизан атмосферой призрачного и величественного северного города. Сценографические лейтмотивы обыгрывают хрестоматийные приметы Петербурга: колонны, скульптуры, гранитный шар. Со строгой графикой декораций контрастируют роскошные костюмы. Из пушкинского текста постановщики заимствовали наполеоновский мотив, представив Германа как человека с безудержными амбициями, гордеца «с профилем Наполеона и душой Мефистофеля». Пытаясь компенсировать свое одиночество властью и богатством, Герман нарушает фундаментальный нравственный закон, сформулированный его современником, философом Кантом: всегда относиться к человеку как к цели, и никогда – как к средству. И все же последнее видение умирающего героя – не инфернальная Пиковая дама, а «небесное создание» – Лиза. Жизнь-игра окончена, и только проиграв всё, Герман обретает мир. Христина Батюшина
