The prank that Jupiter's buddies have come up with to cure his wife Juno of her jealousy promises to be great fun: Jupiter is to woo the ugly swamp nymph Platée. She actually feels desired and, in a moment of tragi-comic self-disregard, even agrees to a marriage with the supreme god. The grotesque mock wedding is undoubtedly the comedic highlight of Rameau's effective score. However, a cruel awakening awaits at least the love-hungry title character. The role is composed for a tenor, in keeping with the usual operatic practice of treating grotesque roles. In Calixto Bieito, the nymph Platée becomes a young drag artist looking for himself and recognition in a nightclub.
