"Ouffe!..." is the puzzled comment of the water nymph Platée when she is ensnared with flattering words by the supreme god Jupiter. Platée - played by a tenor - lives in a swamp, is the ruler of numerous crawling animals and believes that all men should fall in love with her. But the father of the gods himself? It does not end well for the nymph in need of love, because the gods are playing a cruel, set-up game with her: Jupiter only pretends to get involved with Platée in order to heal his goddess Juno of her jealousy - at the expense of the humiliated and disillusioned nymph. Jean-Philippe Rameau's music theater work Platéeis one of the most extraordinary things that the baroque age has produced. An experimental work that explores the genre boundaries between tragedy and comedy, between opera and ballet bouffon. The music is simply enchanting, shimmering in many ways and incredibly plastic. The opera was first performed in 1745 on the occasion of the wedding of the French heir to the throne in Versailles. But the story of a person who stands between two worlds fell through at the court, which is characterized by clear hierarchies and strict rules. Platée's assumption that the king of the gods could fall in love with her was an affront. Rameau's Platéeleads to deeply touching experiences of being human - and is also a declaration of love for theater and the arts: Thespis, the inventor of comedy, appears in the prologue and gives the starting signal for the story ("Formons un spectacle nouveau!"). Finally, with the extravagant figure of La Folie, Rameau impressively demonstrates that good art, indeed life itself, needs madness. With Platée
, Dutch director Jetske Mijnssen and conductor Emmanuelle Haïm base their successful collaboration on Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricieat the Zurich Opera House. In the new production, the French tenor Mathias Vidal, who is at home in the baroque repertoire, can be heard as the platée, while the English soprano Mary Bevan sings the coloratura-firing role of La Folie. The American bass-baritone Evan Hughes, who has already appeared in Belshazzar and Don Giovanni in Zurich, embodies Jupiter.
